For students ages 12-16 years old. No parent needed.

In this 3-part series, we will explore the diverse habitats of the park. Each class will be spent outdoors hiking the trails, observing seasonal changes, and building comfort and confidence in the natural world. Together we’ll learn to identify common plants and animals, practice basic outdoor skills such as shelter building, and follow our curiosity to discover whatever the season has to offer.

Because each session builds on the last, we expect teens to attend all three sessions.

Don't worry about getting too cold - this camp will include both indoor and outdoor activities, along with plenty of hot chocolate to keep campers warm.  Dinner, breakfast, and snacks are provided.

The word "chuckling" doesn't just mean laughter - it's also a name for a baby groundhog (they're also called woodchucks or whistle pigs). Chucklings are born, blind, toothless, almost hairless and helpless at one to two ounces. They nurse for about three months, after which they leave their dens in search of their own space.

Celebrate the upcoming change of season with these fun groundhog- and shadow-themed activities.

Many insects, such as dragonflies, spend the winter hidden beneath the water’s surface, surviving the cold months as nymphs and larvae. Others are specially adapted to appear only in the winter and early spring, making this a unique time to explore their world. During this program, we’ll venture into the wetland habitat at Flag Ponds with dip nets in hand, searching for these often-overlooked creatures. Along the way, we’ll learn how they survive the seasons, what their presence can tell us about the health of the ecosystem, and why wetlands are so important for their life cycles.

Exploring your Backyard and Beyond with iNaturalist and the City Nature Challenge

    Location: Battle Creek Cypress Swamp

    Free Program

In this workshop, you'll learn how to use iNaturalist to photograph and map your observations in a few easy steps. You'll learn about the City Nature Challenge and other projects that can use your observation, how to verify other observations, and other basic features of the iNaturalist app.

We'll go over the basic functions found in the app, then head out to make observations. We'll spend time identifying the things we find--and maybe even identify other iNat users' observations.

Whether you're a current iNaturalist user or brand new to the technology, join us for this fun learning opportunity.

When you respond, include your iNaturalist handle, if you have one.

Our spring Teen Homeschool classes will be a 3-part series focused on kayaking and exploring the ecology of the Patuxent River and its tributaries. Each month, we will head out in kayaks to investigate different stretches of the river and the surrounding wetlands, observing how these ecosystems change with the season. Along the way, we’ll use nets, water-quality testing equipment, and our own senses to study the health of the river and discover the plants and animals that call this watershed home.

Because each session builds on the skills and knowledge of the previous one, we expect teens to attend all three sessions. No parent is needed on the water, but participants must be at least 12 years old.

Enjoy a fun-filled day blending nature exploration with creative art.
While we wander the boardwalk and meadow trails of Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, we will take time to observe and sketch the wonders around us. Along the way, we’ll pause to draw whatever captures our attention—turtles basking in the sun, darting dragonflies, whirligig beetles swirling on the water’s surface, or even the iconic cypress “knees” rising from the swamp.

We’ll also gather a few natural materials during our walk to incorporate into a unique craft, adding a personal touch to your nature journal. It’s the perfect day for artists, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to slow down and connect with the outdoor world through creativity.

Whether your camper is already a trail-blazer or needs a little nudge to step off the sidewalk, this outdoor skills camp builds confidence, curiosity, and real-world know-how. Throughout the week, we’ll dive into the natural wonders of Calvert County while learning the essential skills that help adventurers stay safe, smart, and self-reliant in the “wild.”

Campers will practice hands-on navigation, craft shelters from natural materials, cast a line while learning basic fishing skills, and master the fundamentals of fire safety and first aid. They’ll discover the art of reading the woods by identifying wildlife signs and unraveling the hidden stories animals leave behind. Campers can try their hand at archery, campfire cooking, cruise the creek in a kayak and immerse themselves in plenty of muddy, sun-splashed exploration. It’s the perfect recipe for a week full of adventure.

Gear up—there’s a whole world waiting just beyond the trail!

Remember the magic of summer camp—the forest hikes that felt like grand adventures, the silly stories around crackling campfires, the zany songs that got stuck in your head, and the wet-and-wild water games that left everyone laughing? This camp brings all those timeless traditions to life for a new generation of young campers.

Perfect for first-time adventurers, this program introduces kids to the joy of the outdoors through classic camp activities in a shorter session format. Each day is filled with hands-on discoveries that build confidence, spark curiosity, and encourage teamwork, nature exploration, camp crafts, games and water play. We will even have a campfire and make our own snacks.  Campers will explore nature in fun, age-appropriate ways while making memories and friendships that last long after summer ends.

It’s the perfect way to start a lifelong love of the outdoors—and to capture a little of that old-fashioned summer camp magic.
