    Water is important - in so many ways. During this homeschool series we will explore some of the properties that make water unique and think about how we use water.     Description: Wade in the bay with a seine net to discover critters living close to the shore. Participants will get a close look at bay animals such as grass shrimp, gobies, and skittlefish. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet.

    This program is for all ages. Adult participation is required for children under 12.

    Get a behind-the-scenes look as we enjoy a spring hike around Ward Farm. We will visit several habitats and see which springtime flowers, plants and animals abound. The hike will be approximately 1.5 miles and is not stroller-friendly. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and bring water and insect spray.

    You can’t eat them, but it sure is fun to make them! Join in the muddy fun as we explore the mud –how it feels, how it smells - what animals live in the mud? Come prepared for getting wet and dirty (adults and kids both), wear old sneakers that you can wear in the water (no flip flops), an old towel, and bring a change of clothes for the way home.

    All participants above 2 years old will need to wear masks.

    Want to see some horseshoe crabs spawning on the beach by starlight? Join us for this unique chance to see Flag Ponds at night! With luck we will see horseshoe crabs spawning at the water’s edge or maybe bioluminescent comb jellies in the water!

    In order to keep groups small this year, we are offering staggered start times.  Each session will begin with a short informative talk about horseshoe crabs and end with a walk along the beach to look for them along the beach.  Please only sign up for one session.

    Bring a flashlight, insect repellent, and wear shoes that can get wet. You may want to have a change of clothes for the way home.  Don't forget masks for everyone over the age of 2.

    Learning to observe our local moths is a fun and easy pastime for families. We will get to know our local moth species up close and personal as we go mothing.     We will take a photo safari and hunt for butterflies. Bring your family and your cell phone cameras to "capture" these beautiful creatures. We will get a quick overview of some of our common local butterflies, photography tips, and an intro on how to upload your captures to iNaturalist for documentation. Then head off to explore the meadows on your own for some great photo opportunities.

    Children entering grades 1st and 2nd in Fall 2021

    Designed for beginning campers to get a taste of what day camp has to offer and to become familiar with our amazing local parks. Campers will spend each day at a different Calvert County park engaging in traditional camp activities. We will take hikes, do arts and crafts, sing around the campfire and more! See daily schedule below for daily locations.

    Celebrate National S'mores Day with a sweet campfire feast! You bring the makings, and we will provide you with recipes and  a toasty campfire to roast up your gourmet s'mores treats. Then enjoy some campfire fun while we eat our sweet creations. You will be provided an ingredients list ahead of the program so that you can come prepared to create some unique s'mores recipes.

    Hear that buzzing in the trees? Those are cicadas, one of nature's coolest creatures! Some cicadas spend up to 17 years underground before emerging as adults, and they have an awful lot to say about it! Come learn more about that buzzing sound and the animals that make it, and we'll see if we can find any!

    For Families with children ages 5 and up.

    Join a naturalist for a night hike and a sound census of the late summer crickets and katydids. Learn to identify different species of crickets by their calls and go for a short hike to see what species we can hear.  

    Adult participation is required.  No younger siblings please. This hike is not be suitable for younger children or strollers as it will be off-trail on uneven ground.

    Take a night hike to the beach to view the winter sky. We will do a little stargazing as we look for shooting stars from the Geminids meteor shower.

    Please wear sturdy walking shoes, dress for the weather and bring a flashlight or headlamp. A beach blanket is recommended for extended sky viewing.

    All participants over the age of 2 (including parents) must wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Participants must provide their own masks.

    The Calvert Nature Society has developed policies and procedures for public program operations based on state and CDC guidelines. 

    Please consider the safety, health, and well-being of all participants in our programs and stay home if the participant is ill. Full refunds will be given for cancellations due to health concerns. 

    Prior to participation in any Society sponsored program,  we will ask each individual, to if under 18 a parent, to complete a participant waiver.

    Please download and complete the waiver prior to the program. You may complete it online and email to CypressSwamp@CalvertCountyMD.gov, or print it and bring to  the program.  The waiver needs to be completed for each in-person program.
