Fishing

A valid Maryland fishing license is required for fishing. The parks do not sell fishing licenses.

Hunting

Spring Turkey Season hunting begins in mid-April.

Deer Hunting: In cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, limited hunting is available at Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm, Flag Ponds Nature Park and Hughes Tree Farm.

Hunting will be permitted in appropriate seasons and requires a valid hunting license and a daily reservation from Maryland DNR. You can apply for the Southern Region Hunting Permit through the DNR website. For questions regarding specific areas and other methods to apply, please call the Myrtle Grove office at 301-743-5161.

Freedom Is

These historical decision cards are inspired by oral histories from Calvert County residents and are designed for a public history event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The scenarios are fictionalized but grounded in the lived experiences, landscapes, labor systems, racial realities, and community histories described in the interviews.

Each participant receives an identity card and must confront a difficult decision related to:

  • Freedom
  • Survival
  • Family
  • Resistance
  • Land ownership
  • Escape
  • Loyalty
  • Community responsibility

The activity is designed to help understand the emotional, physical, and moral complexity faced by enslaved people, free Black families, landowners, Indigenous communities, and working-class families across different eras of Calvert County history.
