Updates on the Nature Parks and Programs

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Calvert Nature Society will follow recommendations made by County, State & National guidelines.

Calvert Nature Society  is taking all necessary measures to protect public health and welfare. It is important to follow public health recommendations, advisories and protective actions to slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and limit the number of people infected. The risk of getting coronavirus is still low. Please continue to follow basic preventive actions that protect your health and decrease the chances that you will spread infection of any kind to our more vulnerable friends, neighbors and loved ones.

      At the end of a summer day, if a child isn’t dirty, there is something missing! Dirt is teeming with life, and is often the sign of a good time. In this online class we will dig into underground ecosystems - to discover who and see  what is underfoot. Tune in for ways to explore and play with mud.

      This is an online class.  Supply list will be made available before class time, then tune in to the Calvert Nature Society's Facebook page for video or live stream class.

      Kids ages 6 to 12 years

      Our young virtual scientists will participate in a live online science lesson and experiment daily with our naturalist.  Each day we will set up an experiment together and learn to explore using the scientific method. Materials lists and supplemental educational ideas for at home follow-up explorations will be provided prior to the start of the program. Parental supervision required for these activities.

      We know that for many people, summer plans have changed.  If you will be closer to home than you had planned, join us for our first Great American Campout! 

      You can join in whatever way works for you whether you are in a park campground, your backyard, or even in your living room. 

      To participate in the main event, the overnight on July 25-26, please register. The overnight will include live-streamed fun like: Campout Cooking Challenge, Nightwalk, and Campfire program with games and songs. Only registered participants will be given the link to our Zoom event for overnight - so please be sure to register.

      What does the Campout Include?

      • Live-streamed event on the night of July 25-26 including things like  - campfire cooking, a night walk, family-friendly campfire stories and songs. This will only be open to registered participants, so please do register. Draft schedule can be found here.
      • We will end with a morning check-in on July 26 so we can share our overnight camping experiences.
      • This is a choose-your-own-adventure event: participate as much or as little as you want and are able to in whatever way works best for you.

      For Members Only

      Join our staff online to meet some of our favorite nature center animals.  Each day (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) will focus on a different group of animals.  You can "meet" our one of our turtles, a snake, maybe even an owl.

      Each Zoom meeting will include games, songs, and live animal show and tell.  Resources will be provided for hands-on activities designed for little explorers and their families to do together at home.

      This is an online class.  Supply list will be made available before class time or a camp supplies kit can be picked up at the nature center before the start of camp.

      Why is water important?  How do we use water - inside our homes and in our yards?  Join naturalist, Tania Gale for this online learning opportunity.  We will use our morning Zoom meetings on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as a springboard for at-home, in-your-yard experiments and exploration.

      Registration includes Zoom meetings and ideas for for fun and educational activities based on the class.

      This is an online class.  Supply list will be made available before class time.
