This is a self led event.

Spend the an hour or a day outside exploring with your family in this fun bio blitz-style event called the “City Nature Challenge.” It’s easy – look for and find wildlife and plants, take a picture, and share it to iNaturalist (this can happen back at home also).

City Nature Challenge 2025

Calvert County is part of the City Nature Challenge of the Washington DC region. Cities around the world will be in a friendly competition to document as many species as possible over a four-day weekend.

During the weekend of April 25-28, 2025 join one of our scheduled bioblitzes or explore on your own to find animals, plants, mushrooms, and other life forms. Observations documented on iNaturalist will be included in our region's tally.

Information on the City Nature Challenge and a listing of naturalist led events will be listed there.

To participate, download the iNaturalist app and creating an account.

Reservations are not required, but will help us track participation and for holding informal, spontaneous hikes.

Programs have staggered registration dates. We advertise programs before registration opens which is why you may see that registration is closed, yet there are spaces available.  See details >

Registration, Cancellation, Refunds

The schedule of events is subject to changed based on the status of the coronavirus response, weather, staffing, and other situations that may arise. If Calvert Nature Society or Calvert County Natural Resources Division cancels a program, a full refund will be issued.
