For adults and teens

Embark on a captivating dragonfly field trip! Led by local expert Jason Avery, you'll explore diverse natural habitats to observe and identify these fascinating creatures. You'll learn to recognize dragonflies by their vibrant colors and unique features. Discover their life cycles, habitats, and their role as bioindicators. We will also learn about damselflies, their close relatives. This immersive experience deepens your understanding of  the ecological significance of these ancient insects. Don't miss this extraordinary journey!

Volunteers can sign up through the Opportunity through Calvert Stewards 

Location: Kings Landing Park, Wisner Hall

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Don't forget a hat and sturdy footwear suitable for walking on varied terrains. Rubber boots are also recommended for wading into shallow streams and muddy areas.

Recommended items to bring: binoculars, field guide, magnifying lens, notepad and pen/pencil, water and snacks, sunscreen and bug repellent

Submitting Observations and Species Lists

Part of the workshop includes how to use iNaturalist to document our observations as well as reporting through Odonata Central.

Bring a fully charged Camera or Smartphone to document your discoveries and share them with others.

Before the Activity:

  1. Download the iNaturalist app and create a free account (or go online to www.inaturalist.org).

The Calvert Nature Society has developed policies and procedures for public program operations based on state and CDC guidelines.

Please consider the safety, health, and well-being of all participants in our programs and stay home if the participant(s) are ill. Full refunds will be given for cancellations due to health concerns.

Prior to participation in any Society sponsored program, we will ask each individual, if under 18 a parent, to agree to the participant waiver. The waiver agreement needs to be completed for each in-person program.

The schedule of events is subject to changed based on the status of the coronavirus response, weather, staffing, and other situations that may arise. If Calvert Nature Society or Calvert County Natural Resources Division cancels a program, a full refund will be issued.
